2015 Canal 1 Day 5 – Eastwood to Great Wilne

We breakfasted and set off at the usual time (9ish!) in what promised to be a warm day. The boat roof had heat shimmer already, definitely a day for suntan lotion and a hat!

Sunny morning on the Erewash

The turn into the lock at Gallows Inn is quite tight but we coped with it. We stopped at Sandiacre for lunch, the moorings by the Red Lion are very handy for Co-op but the pub is mostly fizz.

Gallows Inn Lock

By the time we got to Trent Lock we felt the need for ice cream and, as if by magic, they appeared. Suitably refreshed we did battle with the strong wind on the Trent and arrived, windswept, at Sawley Lock. Jackie with her Volunteer Thames Lockkeeper badge on was suitably equipped to operate it. We watered at the lock and caught up with the others at Derwent Mouth Lock and moved onto the evening morning. The piling looked inviting but, as with the other evening, it was opposite a sewage works so we moved the other side of bridge 1 and moored by the marina for roast pork with all the trimmings follwed by a game of Camel Up, recommmended fun for all the family!
The icing on the cake had to be winning the first Ashes Test by 169 runs.
