2016 Canal 2 Day 2 – Broken Cross to Church Lawton

The day was considerably improved on yesterday (no rain) and we set off under a grey sky after a wet night. We passed the wide open spaces of the flashes and Bramble Cuttings where the remains of the tramway that brought puddle clay to the canal can be see and across the aqueduct before arriving in Middlewich where Simon and Nick went to a naughty cake shop and reappeared with various wickedly delicious confections. These served as lunch they were so big. After that we went up the  Middlewich locks and passed the junction with the Shropshire Union. Why is it always blowing a gale at Kings Lock? Every time I’ve been through the junction it seems to be howling. The grey day I loved and turned into a quite superb afernoon up the twin locks towards Kidsgrove. The lock at Rode Heath is particularly picturesque (signal is so bad you’ll have to wait until I’m home for pictures!). We were joined by Gareth Jones soon after who popped over for supper. We pressed on and stopped at Church Lawton for the night, what a sunset we had! Followed by Spag Bol and Eton Mess lite. All in all a very good day.
